Main functions

Aims and objectives

The main aim of GeoConvert is to simplify and expand the use of the information contained in the postcode directories within UK academia. It is hoped that the service will save an enormous amount of duplicated time and effort by providing functions that are quick and easy to use, and are based upon robust, documented methods, details of which will be available from the service interface.

Mechanisms for the rapid, automated incorporation of information from future releases of the National Statistics Postcode Directory (NSPD) have been developed as a major component of the GeoConvert project. This will allow regular updates of the geographies available within the new service in order to maintain the currency of the system.

Background

The GeoConvert project is being undertaken at the Census Dissemination Unit, Mimas, University of Manchester as part of the ESRC's Census Programme.

The National Statistics Postcode Directory (NSPD) and its precursors contain a wealth of useful information about the changing relationships between a wide range of the different geographies used within the UK (postcodes, wards, primary care trusts, etc). However, in their raw state, the size of these datasets, and the complexity of the methods required to identify relationships between geographies can present a considerable deterrent to their use.

GeoConvert develops and extends the work of the Convert (Updated UK Area Master Files) Project and enhances it with a new interface, up-to-date versions of the National Statistics Postcode Directory (NSPD) and the ability to search historical data.
